I have recently started getting up at 5 am (more realistically 5:30am) to go to the gym in the mornings. It has been challenging, but has given me the biggest reward. I started going in the mornings because after work I was way too tired to go. By going early in the morning, I get my workout out of the way.

One question I keep getting is: How do you do it? What tips do you have for getting up that early?
It has taken some trial and error but, I finally found a good routine.
Just remember that everyone is different, these tips may help me but they may not work for you.

Go to Bed at a Decent Time

Going to bed at a reasonable time has been one of the most difficult adjustments I’ve had to make. I have typically been a night owl, staying up late to read or watch Netflix.

Based on my experience, I can stay up late and then get up at 5 no problem. However, once it hits noon I crash. This is why going to bed earlier will not only help you get up early but will keep you going for the rest of the day. So, now instead of going to bed at 11 or 12, I aim to be in bed for 9:30 and asleep by 10.

Pack Everything the Night Before

By packing everything the night before you are limiting the time you have to get ready in the morning. It makes it easy to wake up and just go. You don’t have to think, just grab your clothes, get dressed and head out the door. I tend to go to work after the gym so I make sure to have everything ready at the door.

The last thing you want to do when you just wake up is have too pack a lunch or a bag. I hate having to decided what I want to wear to the gym so I also make sure to take that out the night before.

Have Someone Keep you Accountable

One of the biggest reason I am getting out of bed, is because my boyfriend goes to the gym with me. We help to keep each other accountable. If one of us does not want to get out of bed the other one will keep bugging till we do. When we weren’t living together we had to send each other a picture to prove we went to the gym. We also would call each other to make sure we were both out of bed.

My recommendation is to have someone that you send a text, pic or call to help keep you accountable. Give this person full permission to bug you and push you to make sure you actually go to the gym. To be honest it does not even have to be a person. You can post on instagram, snapchat, just somewhere you can keep track of your goals.

Listen to Your Body

Your body will tell you when it’s tired, but it is so much more emphasized in the morning. When you first get up you have to evaluate how you feel. Don’t use this as an excuse that every time you get up you are too tired to go to the gym. I have used that excuse many times and it just ends up becoming a habit.

What I mean is, when you get up and your body is too sore to even move, then it’s time for a rest day. Learning to be in tune with your body will improve your training. You need rest in order to develop muscle. If you just keep pushing yourself, you will end up getting injured or sick.

I can give you a personal example, I used to get mad at myself when I didn’t workout so I would go about 6 days a week. Not listening to my body when it needed a break, ended with a sinus infection. My take away from my wonderful sinus infection was… LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!!

Since then, I have learned to take days off when I am not feeling it. If I wake up and something feels off I give myself the chance to recover. Instead of going to the gym, I will go for a walk because I know it’s important to get my body moving in whatever way I can that day.

Get a Sunrise Alarm Clock

If all else fails I am telling you this will get you out of bed. This is an alarm clock that starts to light up 15 minutes before you have to get up. It allows for you to wake up to light, making it harder for you to fall back to sleep. Now don’t get me wrong I will try and snooze it but it will turn right back on.

Everyone is different. I never thought I could be a morning person but now I love it. Don’t knock it till you try it for at least 2 weeks. That is how I got into it. I gave myself the challenge to go at least 14 days in the morning between 5 and 6. These days are not in a row but I was able to complete them in just under 3 weeks. I also found that the more I got up earlier the easier it was.
